From the Journals of Quinn and Alexi Goldenscale
Upon entering the chamber the room is incredibly dark except for a spotlight shining on a staff suspended in the air. On closer examination it is indeed the staff of Takhisis (formerly the staff of the beyond).
I call out to Par-Salian but unfortunately he doesn’t respond. I attempt to create a light but my magic doesn’t seem to work in here. I look at Erik but he shakes his head. I worry that perhaps Par-Salian is injured and that he could only open the door.
I call out for several minutes but I finally realise perhaps he thinks I’m an imposter. I attempt to recall something that only he and I would know. I call out – ‘Par-Salian, It is I Alexi, and you told me that you had taken an Irda as an apprentice and that you had spoken to the Grandmaster of the Purple Lotus for his counsel’ A few moments pass and suddenly the darkness disappears and Par-Salian is standing near me. He looks dishevelled, thankfully he does not seem injured.
He goes and sits down at a table. I ask him what happened and he explains that unfortunately he doesn’t know much, only that the attack started mid-morning and that he returned here to take his position as the Last Protector of the Staff. I ask and he states that Montague bought him the staff (Unfortunately I never asked when that happened). He unfortunately does not know the location of Justarius or LaDonna. I explain that I have only discovered that LaDonna has a piece of Udoonin’s essence inside of her (I removed Justarius’ portion into myself). They will try to extract it to try and resurrect Udoonin but hopefully they will need both pieces for it to work (and I won’t be giving mine up without a fight).
I ask if he knows of any other traitors besides Gwarvel but unfortunately he does not. I try to ascertain where the other mages are being kept and luckily Par-Salian can attempt to scry for May using her familiar we found in the classrooms. He unfortunately can’t get an accurate lock but he knows she is still in the tower. Luckily that is enough information. I deduce that they must be kept in the Hall of Magius and Par-Salian confirms he cannot penetrate the hall. In fact, he explains that they seem to have many wards and protections up – all unusual magic from Par-Salian’s perspective.
It’s at this point I notice that Par-Salian seems to have become a bit more forceful. I get the impression that he’s looking to start fighting back. I caution him against it as the invading force has shown that they have come exceptionally well prepared. Magic Resistant armour etc. I explain that they will want the staff it is not however their main objective! They are here for the dagger and also Justarius and LaDonna.
I propose a different strategy. I explain that I have learnt that the there’s knowledge in the Great Library that will aid me in stopping this enemy but unfortunately studying the Tablets of Wisdom used up all my time. If Par-Salian would send me back in time 12 hours, it would allow me to find the information I need and also use the opportunity to discover more information about the attack. I explain that I know I can’t stop the attack but I could learn and try to minimize the damage. I suggest taking one of my unconscious gnome friends with me which will allow me to change things just enough to save the mages that have been killed. I can tell Par-Salian is considering the request. Mainly because I didn’t just want to attempting to stop the attack and possibly altering the timeline for the worst.
He brings up the edict by the High God that no-one of the Chaos races can go back in time but I point out that if the mages fall the world will enter a period of Chaos. If the enemy succeeds they will release Chaos on the world and we will be doomed. He’s wavering but unfortunately finally decides that he won’t budge. He does agree to send me back though and perhaps I can minimize the impact of the attack. (Remove Montague and the magical items from the tower, access the wards/protections holding the mages, perhaps his death is not important to the timeline). I only have to ensure that events happen enough so that Par-Salian will send my contemporary self, back in time again, as soon as that happens anything that happens after is back on the original timeline.
I agree to Par-Salian’s terms and he begins preparations.
During this time, I turn to Erik, hoping that I can try and work out what Astinus meant with his entry in the journal. I ask him what he was doing before I summoned him and he gets very shady. I stress the point that I have received information from a reliable source, that calls into question his loyalty. He of course takes offense but he finally gives up that he has been out researching…. That’s all that he will say. Unfortunately, before I can push further Par-Salian calls Erik over and tasks him with drawing a magic circle on the ground. I worry about the situation. The only two reasons I can think that Erik would die would be an accident or if he did something like betrayal or attempted to hurt someone I cared about. That Astinus journal infuriates me. Am I bound by this entry or do I still have free will over the situation. With knowledge of this event influence my actions into causing it. I am most annoyed and perplexed.
Par-Salian finishes studying the spell and gets to step into the circle. Casting the spell, I am transported back to 05:00am that day in the Great Library.
From the Journal of Quinn Goldenscale
Standing back up after losing consciousness in the Temple I looked around to make sure everyone was okay, and apart from a few bruises everyone inside the Temple was coming round and standing. But it was Lt Day that was the most surprised and he was still staring in happiness and disbelief that he really did have his hand back. Striding outside I can see that the ‘power’ or ‘blast’ of divine energy has swept through almost all of the Temple District as people outside the Temple were also picking themselves up off the ground. Looking back at the temple I could see that it was somehow ‘cleaner’ and no longer tarnished. It still needs repair but it is now a welcoming and open place.
A quick survey of the area reveals a second fact – where is the wagon with Miles and the gnomes? I detail a knight to investigate and mount up and ask Lukan, “What exactly did my brother say to you?” Lukan replies saying, “He said you were in danger, but he was even in greater danger – He returned with the black robe – his name was Erik, to the Tower of High Sorcery.”
I groan inwardly and ask “Why was the Erik there?” and Lukan says we found the tablets and Erik was needed to read the ‘Evil’ tablet, Alexi the ‘Good’ tablet and Lukan the ‘Neutral’ tablet. He adds that the ‘Good’ tablet had been sheared off by magic and was missing! I ask is Lukan knows where the missing part of the tablet is and but is hiding the truth from me!
‘Why has Alexi gone to the Tower?’ Lukan adds “The raven has shown me the way; he goes on a perilous journey from which he may not return.” That is not acceptable; he must live – ‘How can I get to him?’ and Lukan says ‘You cannot.’ I am finding it hard to believe things that come out of this Druid’s mouth. Mostly it is half-truths and riddles because his ‘God’ commands him. I can actually believe that last part though as obstacles are meant to be overcome, not bypassed with ease. Oh Alexi what are you doing!?!?
Can you take me to the tablets and Lukan replied, “No I cannot and the tablets are unimportant. Yopu must focus your responsibilities here. Fine… and I give the order to ride back in the direction of my manor and hope we can locate the wagon with Miles and the gnomes. I ask Karnak to continue with his preparations of the Temple and ask Lt Day and Tiny what they wish to do. They are happy to investigated the docks and bring me back a report on the Minotaur ship in the harbour (I had a feeling they did not want to stay with Karnak after what just happened – he did go overboard with bringing them to me in the Temple).
I choose the path that seemed most likely for the wagon to travel and then we come across the site of a battle. In the street are amoured bodies and they all have been killed by demons and not devils. Lukan dismounts for a closer inspection as my knights spread out and search the area. Lukan says that it seems the demons have played another hand in the game and this is not a random attack and he points out a Teleportation Circle on the ground nearby and he asks if there is any other wizard in the city? Raistilin does not count…
I dismount as well and stand at the edge of the battle zone and can see that as Lukan talks to me that he can sense another presence here. I nod in understanding and he moves amongst the bodies and then as he turns back to me I see a sword come point first out of the centre of his chest and a demon appear behind Lukan giggling and laughing in delight. Lukan slides off the blade and battle is joined.
The demon moves first and disappears as I hold aloft the sword of Vinas and call upon the blessing of Paladine. The sun hits the tip of the blade and a golden glow flows out from me and across the area! The demon reappears and screams in agony as the divine light strikes it and melts one of the swords in its hands. I charge forward before anyone can react and smash down with the sword and the demon dies before my onslaught. I then see that the ‘Mordor’ blade has formed a puddle and it going to explode; I order everyone to retreat and I grab Lukan and just manage to get outside the blast radius.
I cast a healing word on Lukan and he is ‘better’ but not fully healed and the ‘Mordor’ blades are foul abominations that have no place in this world. Lukan adds that the demons have taken Miles and the gnomes as a distraction; that I had already worked out but it is good he is still thinking so he will not die from the demons strike.
I manage to sneak down to the old archives and place a ward on the door as to prevent any random people from coming in. I contemplate where to start and decide to look into the earliest records – from the age of dreams. Luckily there are only a few tomes here. I attempt to access the font to see if it senses any familiarity from the books. Two stand out. One has a sigil on it that I have seen before but I can’t quite recall where. They are both in delicate condition and so I take them both over to the table nearby. Unfortunately, the other book turns out to be imbued with a malevolent power. Luckily I manage to protect myself from it. I realize the power is the power of Chaos…. A book of Chaos…. Holy crap…. Incredibly dangerous item. I place that book into the dampening bag, holy crap. I can’t even consider what to do with that for the moment.
I focus my attention on the other book and I gently open the front page and use my amanuensis ritual to copy the page onto a blank book that I found (I found 2x hand size, one large blank book).
I finally recognise the symbol and realise it’s the same symbol that Lukan has on his amulet…. He has some connection to this… how is that possible?
The first page is in some incredibly ancient language (unfortunately not ancient Solmanic). I end up having to cast another Comprehend Language ritual on the page and I am finally able to understand it. The first page is actually a ritual. It is written by a person named Draleth of the Brotherhood. I check the 2nd page to make sure there isn’t more information as the first page doesn’t really explain what the ritual does. But that page although even with the comprehend language ritual makes the text all blurry. I realise that the ritual is some type of test to prove yourself worthy of reading the rest of the book.
I cast it and succeed in unlocking the rest of the book.
There is so much information and magic in here. It actually seems to be some type of autobiography of this Draleth who is an ancient Irda spellweaver of incredible power. I find out the following information during an initial skim through the book:
• A history of the Irda (that reconciles with what information I knew)
• All Irda have just one name. No individual families, they are all a collective.
• Persons of great influence in the Irda society would be given titles that replaces their name
• This was the standard practice until Draleth.
• He was/is? an incredibly powerful Spellweaver who (besides being incredibly vain) was able to accomplish so many things that he was named a prime (the powerful leader of the Irda) but uniquely he kept his name. It doesn’t explain why he was allotted such an unprecedented honour
• They had a home to the West of the continent on an island. They also at one point had a settlement on the East side.
• All Irda had internal magic but it was Draleth that discovered that this power (He calls it Wal) could be used to do way more than what was ever thought possible.
It’s at this point that I realise that this Wal, this is the gift that the gods gave me. From the book I realise also that Draleth makes several references to the fact that he came to the continent where High Sorcery was in its infancy and that he attempted to blend the magics and came away frustrated due to the powers being completely different. It required a completely different mindset. He was also of the opinion that it was exceedingly more inferior than this power. If I do this, it will be difficult and counter-productive to go back to the old way of High Sorcery. I spend a bit more time researching what he says about the moons. He is in fact quite smug in the fact that he was able to rip power from the moons even without their permission to amplify his power. This is what I have been unintentionally doing with the Gods of Light. That is not what I want. If I do use this power, it will be with much more respect. I already see the danger from the texts that Draleth was incredibly arrogant, perhaps warranted but still, excessively so. This power could perhaps be intoxicating. I will have to be diligent to not become like him.
Knowing that this will be a great sacrifice I also see it has an incredibly discovery that I hopefully will be able to use for the art and the magic. I attempt to access my Wal. I am successful!
I can already tell the spells that I have memorized are useless now with this power. I have a great deal of raw power but it will be up to my experimentation and research to discover what uses it can be. According to the book, Dalreth was of the opinion that almost anything was possible if you had the will and knowledge. Learning to think in the way this power operates will be the difficult task.
More information I find in the book:
• The Irda or this power never use spell components (that is already a positive!)
• It unfortunately does not mention any items – I can assume that using the power (font) through items will not work
• There is no mention of Good/Neutral/Evil, and the only mention of Takhisis implies the term mother (the only time he’s even remotely humble).
• I start to look through the spells and they are so unusual compared to High Sorcery magic. So completely different in innovation and execution
• One of the more startling discoveries is this concept of ripping power from the moons (he has sophisticated moon charts that would have been inconceivable back then. It is during an ‘alignment’ (I read that as : NOTE) he is also able to rip the power of Chaos…. Holy crap.
• I also realise that this is perhaps one of several books he has written. He is quite condescending in the way he explains spells. Almost that this book was for beginners/novices.
I have the thought that perhaps Denvark and Dalreth are the same person?!?!? I check the last entries of his writing but unfortunately it just stops. It explains that he’s going in search of an item but unfortunately ends there.
Deciding to kill two birds with one stone, I attempt one of the rituals in the book – a detect magic ritual – looking for any other books in this section of the library by Dalreth. I attempt to use my Orb of Aradia first by channelling the sorcery through it but as soon as I attempt it I can tell it will not work. I break the link immediately.
I decide to use just the ritual and tendrils come out of my hands (Like the vision Lukan described to me that Denvark did when he was attempting to find the tablets!
I get two responses of power back. I wonder what these tomes will contain.

From the Journal of Quinn Goldenscale
With the explosion echoing through-out the city, horns start to blare out from the walls and other parts of the city. Well at least the guards are on their toes. I look around the area as my knights regather themselves and look for a way to locate the whereabouts of the Demons and their prisoners. Lukan adds that they have not left the city as they want to keep me busy so i realise that I do have a way to find them.
I turn to Chrome and say “The Demons are still in the city and have Miles and the gnomes. Cant you find them Younglings?” Chrome leaps into actions and quickly investigates the area and then flies into the sky and I order the Knights to follow and eventually we arrive in the warehouse district. And can see Chrome circling one particular warehouse. We have the demons location at last! I order one Knight to go get Karnak, have another Knight go to the Wall to relay what has happened to Sturm. Then another Knight to locate Lt Day and Tiny and a fourth Knight to bring me the Commander of the Watch as I am sure his men will know their way around the area.
I move back to a safer distance so that we do not give away our location to the Demons (much to the relief of my Knights) and wait for the others to arrive. This is when Lukan approaches me for the first time and says:-
“Is it worth the risk of going into the warehouse? What are the lives of these few mean in the grand scheme as you know the Demons are merely looking for a way to separate you and your brother and to stop you both from going to the Night of the Eye.”
Many of the Knights in earshot would like nothing better than to slap some sense into Lukan but I say, ”What we are doing, Lukan, is not playing into the Demons hands. We are saving the lives or those innocents could up in the machinations of the gods. No one is left behind.”
And you never leave an enemy behind your lines.
This is followed by the second conversation by Lukan… See the secret!
